This work is closely related to a group of four still lifes Fantin-Latour painted in 1866 for a Greek businessman in London, Michael Spartali. The blue vase which features in three of the paintings and a similar assortment of fruit from all four works also appear in ‘Fruit et Fleurs’. It is possible that Fantin-Latour originally produced this work as part of Spartali’s commission but decided to donate it to the sale at the Hôtel Drouot in aid of Léon Bonvin’s children, following Léon’s suicide in January 1866. This painting was purchased from the sale by Mme Lepautre on behalf of John and Joséphine Bowes for 82 francs on the 24th May 1866. The toppled fruits in this work provide the composition with a sense of drama that illustrates Fantin-Latour’s superiority in the genre.
