This is one of three fruit still lifes in the collection of Glasgow Museums painted during Courbet's imprisonment in Sainte-Pélagie during the winter of 1871. Although Courbet always protested his innocence, he was found guilty of assisting with the destruction of the Vendôme Column during the Commune.

Writing to his friend Castagnary, Courbet railed against the prison authorities: 'they are preventing me from working … There are people who are put in prison because they do not want to work, whereas I am in prison to be deprived of my work. This is all the more frustrating as I have an idea … to paint bird's eye views of Paris …' Denied the chance to work outside, Courbet executed still lifes after the gifts of fruit and flowers brought to him by family and friends.
