Jak Katarikawe was a self-taught artist who drew on his dreams and life experiences to create his colourful art. His talents were first recognised by David Cooke, Professor of Literature at Makerere, who gave him access to the college’s art department and introduced him to Samuel Ntiro.

Jak’s paintings and drawings range in topic from local Kiga traditions and Christian imagery to overtly sexual themes. His works have been reproduced on calendars, posters and health campaigns for family planning and HIV-AIDS. This is an early wax crayon drawing of a couple in love. The motif of an intimately entwined couple was recurrent in his work in the 1960s.

Jak moved to Kenya in the late 1970s, and enjoyed a long, successful career in Nairobi.
