This is a copy of ‘Frère et sœur bretons’ (Breton Brother and Sister) of 1871 in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. In September 1871 the New York picture was sold to the Paris-based art dealer, Goupil, who in turn sold it the following month to art dealer Knoedler, New York. It is not known where or when this copy was made, but a replica of the original picture was painted by one of Bouguereau’s pupils, Léon Perrault (1832–1908).
