This is a full-length, life-size portrait of the Emperor, aged about 65. He wears the uniform of an Austrian Field Marshal: a long grey great coat with red and gold collar and cuffs, a white coat embroidered with gold, a gold and red sash round his waist, red breeches and high black boots. The Golden Fleece hangs from his neck and he wears the star of Maria Theresa. The rather stiff Neoclassical setting is reinforced by the pedestal and vase on the right and the stone balustrade in the background.
