The sitter, Francis Carteret Scott, was the sixth son of John Scott, 3rd Laird of Malleny and was born in 1754. He worked as a Collector of Customs in Montego Bay, Jamaica in the 1780s and 1790s and in 1799 became Director of the Close Harbour Co., Jamaica. He returned to Scotland and on 31st January 1801 in Edinburgh, married Elizabeth Cunningham, whose father was Colonel of the Scots Brigade. Their son Carteret was born in Edinburgh on 22nd September 1803 and a daughter, Isabella, two years later. The family lived at 39 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh and at their country home, Malleny. Francis Carteret Scott died in 1835.
