Downton's cousin, Frances Witts, died of pneumonia in May 1935 at the age of twenty-six. Soon afterwards, Downton started painting portraits in her memory, using a photograph as his model. The composition is based on Ambrogio de Predis's so-called portrait of Beatrice d'Este. The technique and the neat manner of painting also relate directly to the Italian work.
