She married Richard, 1st Baron Lumley (created Viscount Lumley in 1689, and Earl of Scarborough in 1690) in 1684/1685. She later became Lady of the Bedchamber to Queens Mary and Anne. It is in this sort of Court milieu in which Wissing might have painted the original of this portrait.
An inscription on the painting identifies the sitter as Adelaida, Duchess of Shrewsbury (d.1726), but the image bears no resemblance to her.
