Illustrations of four (out of eighteen) rank badge designs for Chinese officials. There were two streams, Civil and Military, with nine ranks in each.
The Chinese translates:
Leopard: 3rd/4th level Military rank
Silver pheasant: 5th level Civil rank
Lion: Military rank (no level stated, but 1st/2nd)
Xiezhi/unicorn: (not stated, but 7th/8th Military level)
Both the style and the specific animal/bird assigned to each rank changed over time; these appear to be early Qing dynasty (1644-1750s).
