She is standing looking at the viewer, and wears a bonnet with a dark veil drawn back over the head, and large red bow at the neck. The dress, which is of light blue and grey material, has three-quarter length layered sleeves which are drawn up at the front by bows and frills. There is a peplum over a full-length dress on a crinoline. She also wears white gloves. In her left hand, she holds up a richly embroidered piece of red material – possibly a 'miser's purse'?: in her right is a stopper, or cap of some sort. Behind her, on the left, is a desk, on which are placed a china doll dressed in a gaudy orange outfit, a small picture of a clergyman, a smaller one of Christ Carrying the Cross, and in front of these, two bottles, one of eau-de-cologne.
