This is the Yorkshire Challenge Cup final between Halifax and York at Holbeck Recreation Ground, Leeds, on the 29th December 1877. York are wearing yellow and black hooped jerseys; Halifax are wearing blue and white hooped jerseys. This is the first of 8 paintings that the artist exhibited at the Royal Academy.
