In an attempt to rejuvenate her husband’s interest in his painting after Bomberg had fallen into a characteristic bout of depression after numerous rejections by the War Artists’ Advisory Committee, Lilian began to buy flowers for Bomberg to paint. Although he was initially reluctant, Lilian recalled, ‘he used to go every day early to Covent Garden to buy the flowers himself. He only painted flowers and very much enjoyed doing it. He always arranged them himself, in the same vase, against the same curtain. He wasn’t interested in flower arrangement – he’d just put them in and paint them’.
