Kennedy was born in 1905, into a large and artistic family. He trained as an artist in London, and was successful from early on in his career. His wife, Winifred Aves, assisted him by creating the large and complex flower arrangements that he so enjoyed painting. They collected the 18th-century vases featured in his work. During the Second World War, Kennedy fought in the Eighth Army. When he was stationed in Antwerp, Kennedy took the opportunity to study all the Dutch and Flemish flower paintings that he could gain access to.
