Léon de Smet (1881–1966) was born in Ghent where, alongside his older brother Gustave (1877–1933), he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. He moved to London in 1914. His paintings, which include portraits as well as still lifes and interiors, are impressionistic in style, though later in life he tended toward brighter colours and more defined figures.
