A replica copy of the boar, which was originally located in the gardens at Joseph Strutt's house in central Derby. The original boar was based on the Renaissance boar sculpture in Marketo Nuovo, Florence. The Arboretum was created by Joseph Strutt (1765–1844) – textile magnate, philanthropist and former Mayor of Derby. He donated it to the Town Council in 1840 for the ‘enjoyment and education of the people’. The boar was transferred to the Arboretum when it opened, and survived until 1941, when it was severely damaged by a Second World War bombing raid. As part of the Arboretum refurbishments, the original bear was replaced by this bronze replica.
