The University Sports Centre had created this all-weather playing area for a variety of sports, and its surface was marked out for each of the games played there: tennis, hockey and football. The abstract colour patterns of the court lines and the rapid movement of figures were especially interesting for the artist when, on a damp evening, he saw the clouded night sky transformed a deep maroon colour by the light spill of the West London street lights.
