The work forms part of the Eden Benchmarks, a series of ten contemporary stone sculptures located at intervals along the length of the River Eden. The River Eden valley is used as a flight path, so for the artist, the winged seat was a representation of the desire to take flight and join the birds sweeping through this deep valley. The proximity of hermits caves dug out of the sandstone cliffs also makes the seat a symbol for spiritual yearning. The project was instigated by Dick Capel of the East Cumbria Countryside Project. Local communities selected the artists they wanted to work with and the selected artist was put up in those communities for a week to start developing their ideas. They then returned with fully formed ideas to make their works in that community.
