Belgian-born French sculptor Eugène Dodeigne is best known for his expressively carved abstract stone figures of which Flamme is a typical example. Made in 1983, the monumentality and vigorous direct carving of the sculpture are characteristic of Dodeigne’s mature work, which was influenced by Auguste Rodin. The twisting abstract figure stands over six feet high and is carved from grey Belgian granite, which was Dodeigne’s preferred medium for outdoor pieces. The finely ruled striations cutting across the surface contours serve to enhance the sense of tormented, almost flame-like movement, while also adding to the weathered, archaic appearance of Dodeigne’s works of the 1980s.
