David Hardy painted rustic genre and country subjects. He exhibited widely at the Royal Society of British Artists, between 1862 and 1870, and at the British Institute, between 1855 and 1865.

David Hardy painted genre scenes, which presented a sentimental view of childhood, poverty and of growing up in the countryside. Genre painting was a popular style in Victorian Britain and in Northern Europe. In Britain genre painting offered a contrast to the historical, religious and natural subjects favoured by Pre-Raphaelite artists. However, Victorian values and ideals were very influential as many genre paintings often had a strong moralistic tone which determined the stories of daily life they portrayed.
