A scene showing the Old Fleet Anchorage, St Helens, Isle of Wight looking towards the south west. Dating from about the 1750s, the view shows the Norman Tower on the right of old St Helen’s Church which was abandoned as a church during the 19th century. Brading Tower is shown with its clock face on the south side. The church in the distance is St Mary’s parish church of Brading two and a half miles from St Helen’s Tower. The stretch of water, known as Brading Haven was once a Roman galley anchorage. It no longer exists. To the left of St Helen’s Tower is an embankment wall and a sluice gate. Above the sluice gate is a row of houses, probably St Helens village. The hills behind the tower are the Downs and the area behind the saluting ship is probably Ashey Down. There is a beached yacht in the foreground and a ship at anchor firing a salute. A ship’s boat is moving between the yacht and the shore. A small anchored boat with a canopy over it can be seen in the foreground on the right with a figure standing up. At the water’s edge behind this is a woman carrying two buckets on a yolk. On the shoreline on the left five men are hauling in a fishing net.
