A painting of finely grouped boats with much clearness and transparency in the water. Marine scenes such as this have long been collected by the Scots, whose own boats were often built by the Dutch. The artist painted such tranquil scenes mainly in his early career and his first such works date from c.1653. Van de Velde the Younger painted a series of calm marines during his early years, distinguished by the careful placement of elements to create a mood of peace and serenity. Among the many vessels depicted are, in the right foreground, a hoeker, next to this a boat which has been identified as a brown-sailed sprit-rigged tjotter, and in the left foreground, there is a partial view of a prit-rigged pont. Further away is a kaag with a white mainsail.
