This little painting has a stark, realistic quality. A group of fishermen are shown unloading their catch in Arbroath on the East Coast of Scotland. Tindle uses a limited range of colours, mainly greys and earths applied with a palette knife and broad brush. This gives a grim, industrial feel to the scene. The expressive areas of paint are controlled within a framework of carefully drawn perspective lines. The details of the wheelhouse and the rigging are precisely recorded with a fine sable brush.

Tindle was born in Yorkshire but grew up in Coventry. He attended the School of Art in 1945 and quickly made a reputation as a professional painter in London.
