Born in Dalry, George Houston was educated at Saltcoats Public School and Glasgow School of Art. During his life he painted many pictures of his native Ayrshire, including a few of Saltcoats harbour. He was a prolific landscape painter, using both oil and watercolour. According to the Royal Scottish Academy’s eulogy on his death Houston's landscapes were, 'amongst the finest landscapes produced in Scotland'.
