Field Marshal Sir Donald Martin Stewart, 1st Baronet, GCB, GCSI, CIE, was commissioned into the Bengal Army in 1840. He served in the frontier expeditions against the Mohmands and then in the Indian rebellion of 1857, and he commanded the Bengal brigade in the 1867 Abyssinian expedition. In the Second Anglo-Afghan War of 1878, Stewart commanded the Kandahar field force, eventually gaining the supreme military and civil command in northern Afghanistan. After the Maiwand disaster, he took the bulk of the army back to India through the Khyber Pass whilst despatching the Division under Sir Frederick Roberts on the infamous march from Kabul to Kandahar. Promoted to General in 1881, he was for five years Commander-in-Chief in India, and afterwards a member of the Council of the Secretary of State for India until his death.
