Arthur (1850–1942), Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, was Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in England and Wales, from 1901 to 1939. During this time he oversaw the construction of Freemasons’ Hall in London, which was built as a memorial to Freemasons who died in the First World War. In this portrait, which was commissioned by the United Grand Lodge of England, he is wearing the robes of the Order of the Garter, the highest chivalric order in the United Kingdom, over the uniform of a field marshal.
