One of the finest Paters in The Wallace Collection, 'Fête galante', like 'The Vivandières of Brest' (P452) and 'Fête in a Park' (P424), dates from the 1720s. Although there are typical references to Watteau in the figures, its picturesque charm is very much Pater's own creation. The richly coloured landscape, lively technique and pretty figures with pointed faces are typical of Pater's best works. The great nineteenth-century collector Anatole Demidoff, Prince of San Donato, is its first securely identified owner. The high price Lord Hertford paid to secure it at the latter’s sale in 1863 scandalised contemporaries.
