Allan was a Glasgow born landscape and marine painter who studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. He was commissioned to paint a portrait of former Prime Minister Lloyd George in 1934. In this work Allan has captured the picturesque village of Ferryden on the River Esk near Montrose, Scotland. Ferryden was once an important fishing town which had developed due to the massive growth in the Scottish herring industry particularly throughout the nineteenth century.
