The sitter was an Italian-born composer active in Austria and Germany. As a performer (for which he was lionised) his interests lay in Bach, Mozart and Liszt. As a composer he showed particular interest in Gregorian chant, folk music and new scales rather than adopting atonality. Looking to the viewer, he is depicted wearing a white high-collared garment beneath a greeny-black sweater or coat, and he appears to be holding an open score.
