The origins of Fergusson's sculptural tendencies can be traced long before he began producing works in the round. His lasting preference for layering thick paint onto canvas, expressed by him as a desire for 'solidity' and 'durability', seems to underline a fundamentally sculptural approach.

The robustly painted nudes made from 1910 to 1912 lent themselves naturally to a three-dimensional progression. In keeping with them, his sculpture is designed to convey female health, vigour and power. It was between 1915 and 1924 that Fergusson produced almost all his sculpture.
