The original catalogue entry stated the medium was oil on canvas, but there is a coarse, gravel-like material and possibly other substances incorporated in it so that there are a lot of textures and some slight relief. The painting shows penguins in the iconic Penguin Pool, and a number of seagulls swooping and flying. The Penguin Pool was designed by architect Berthold Lubetkin. It was constructed around 1934, refurbished 1985–1987, and abandoned in the 1990s/early 2000s as being an unsuitable habitat for penguins, when they were transferred to a more natural pond enclosure. The Lubetkin structure is currently not in use by the Zoological Society of London. It is Grade-I listed.
