A miniature oil on vellum or ivory painted by Maria Isabella Pitt. Painted at Scolton May 1851 and finished in London in August 1851.
Fanny was the eldest daughter of James and Frances Higgon. She was a society belle and was much courted, but chose to marry John Colby in 1841. It was a successful and happy marriage though sadly childless. Mrs Pitt manages to capture the quality of Fanny’s fine silk dress, showing the simplicity affordable to the wife of a very wealthy man.
