Born in Paris in 1928 to Polish refugees, Dora Holzhandler spent the early part of her life living on a farm in Normandy with a Catholic family. This early experience of living as both an exile and away from her own Jewish family reveals itself in her paintings, which repeatedly feature a central maternal figure and are painted in a purposefully unsophisticated but charming style.
