This painting is an important work as it was the artist's first to be exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1872. It is based on a drawing entitled 'Hours of Idleness' which appeared in the periodical 'Once a Week' in June 1869. The original sketch was inspired by a picnic and boat trip on the Thames with Fildes's great friend, the artist Henry Woods and the latter's two sisters Fanny and Annie (Fildes eventually married Fanny in 1874).
