Arthut Severn, who married Ruskin’s cousin Joan in 1871, followed his father Joseph as a professional artist, first exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1863. He built a studio at Brantwood, Ruskin’s house on Coniston Water, and attempted some ambitious oils paintings, although his best work, usually landscape, is in watercolour and pastel.
