Little is known of the landscape painter John Horace Hooper, who lived in London and exhibited at the Society of British Artists (1877–1878), at the RA (1885–1899), and at the RHA (1894 & 1899). Despite obscurity he appears to have been highly gifted. Hooper exhibited a landscape entitled 'Fading Light' at the RA in 1890; this is perhaps that work.

The painting, of a very high standard, is an evocative and somewhat melancholy image of the golden glow of a sunset fading across a darkening landscape.
