David Bomberg created many of his paintings by working quickly on the spot as the light changed.

After the Second World War Bomberg made expeditions into the Cornish and Scottish countryside. He worked on huge canvases which he finished in the field in one go.

The artist is one of Britain's most important painters. He wants us to look at the brushmarks as well as the subject. The subtle effects in the paint are important to many people who enjoy his work.
