Copy of an antique bust acquired to replace Lord Burlington`s original now at Chatsworth. The modern marble bust shows the Athenian dramatist Euripides, after a Roman version in the Farnese Collection (National Archaeological Museum, Naples). The artist selected a herm style, popular in the gardens of 18th-century aristocrats. The head has long, wavy, thinning hair that falls in defined locks around the face. It has a lined forehead and furrowed brow. The nose has a prominent hump at the top of the bridge. The eyes are deep-set, with a subtle downward gaze. His beard is full and well-defined. The chest is overly large and devoid of detail except for a small fold of fabric that drapes around the neck and left shoulder. Euripides produced 92 plays, four of which won first prize in Athens.
