In 1998 the Tayside Medical History Museum staged an exhibition at Ninewells Hospital called ‘Colour & Warmth’, showing the results of artist Andrew Hay’s work with patients at the hospital. Hay was inspired to paint a portrait of one of the patients, Hugh McColl (known as Shuggy). Shuggy (then in his mid-twenties) was severely disabled, unable to speak or control the movement of his limbs. Hay was struck by the intensity of his expression, and drew parallels to El Greco’s painting of Christ, El Expolio. This extraordinary painting was the result, and a rare example of a portrait of a disabled person in a public art collection.
