Folding fan, the sticks and guards elaborately carved, pierced, painted and gilt with Chinoiserie motifs. The leaf is painted with a panoramic view of Esher Place after an engraving by printmaker Luke Sullivan.

Designed by William Kent, the gothic revival building (since demolished) was the seat of Henry Pelham (1694–1754) who served as Prime minister from 1743 to his death in 1754. The composition is populated throughout with groups of figures either boating or walking the expansive grounds. The peripheral parts of the leaf are painted with floral motifs in the Chinoiserie manner, most probably by a different hand. On the reverse, the ribs (the upper, thinner parts of the sticks) are visible, denoting a single rather than double leaf. When the leaf is single it is often said to be mounted ‘á l’Anglaise’.
