ERNIE WISE / 1925 - 1999; on the first plaque: Ernie Wise / Doreen Wiseman the widow of Ernie Wise was delighted to fund / this sculpture by Melanie Wilks with the Morley Murals Committee / funding the infrastructure and Marshall PLC donating the stone. / Ernie Wise performed at the Morley Pavilion / with great success before joining / Eric Morecambe in their much loved comedy double act. / Ernie attended school in East Ardsley, / part of the old Borough of Morley. / We are proud to have Ernie's statue in Morley / and to count him one of our own; on the second plaque: ERNIE WISE / 1925 - 1999 / This Statue was commissioned by Morley Murals Committee, / Sculpted by Melanie Wilks, financed & unveiled by / Mrs Doreen Wiseman, Ernie's widow in 2010. / It celebrates the association of Morley with a young / entertainer called Ernest Wiseman, who, in March 1938 / at the age of 12 years, won a talent competition at the / Pavilion Theatres, Morley. / A professional career as a song and dance man under / the stage name Ernie Wise was launched. / With stage partner Eric Morecambe they became one / of Britain's all-time favourite entertainment duos.
