Historian. Born in Alexandria and educated in Vienna, Berlin, London and Cambridge, Hobsbawm taught until retirement at Birkbeck College, University of London, and from 1982 has been Emeritus Professor of Economic and Social History, London University, and has taught at the New School for Social Research, New York. A founder member of the editorial board of the historical journal Past and Present, Hobsbawm's publications include Primitive Rebels (1959), Labouring Men (1964), and the trilogy The Age of Revolution: Europe 1789–1848, The Age of Capital 1848–1875, and The Age of Empire 1875–1914.
