An equestrian statue of Arthur Wellesley (1769–1852), Duke of Wellington, whose greatest victory was against Napoleon at Waterloo on 18th June 1815. He is depicted on his charger, 'Copenhagen', dressed in the full uniform of a Field Marshal, with his right hand on his hip, his chest expanded and his head turned slightly to the right. His posture is intended to suggest that of a general reviewing his troops. The pedestal is decorated with bronze pulvinated friezes on the cornice and base, and has four relief panels on the dado illustrating events in the Duke's life and career. The money raised by public subscription was by far the largest, as well as the most speedily gathered, subscription for any monument in Glasgow in the nineteenth century.
