The painting's subject became an extremely popular composition and the artist painted many versions of it, of which the earliest secure example, dated 1613, is in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles. This painting differs from all of the other versions in showing the horse standing on the right and facing left, rather than in the centre facing right, and in the disposition of some of the animals. The animals are clustered more closely together than in the larger Getty painting. Several of Brueghel’s animals, namely the horse and the two lions, were adapted from works by Rubens.
