In 'Entombment' one sees further evidence of such spiritual connotations, the painterly forms seeming to suggest the energy and passion of the New Testament narrative. For Johnstone, however, the entombment is used to represent universal notions of life and death, birth and decay. This piece is characteristic of Johnstone’s later work, combining the formal qualities of Abstract Expressionism with his own personalised spirituality.
