This is an unusual portrayal of a familiar subject: women, headed by Christ’s mother Mary, lament as his body is taken for burial following his crucifixion. However, while the women are dressed in contemporary Italian costume, the men carrying Christ wear Turkish turbans. Much of Lotto’s later work is imbued with an intense spirituality. He died as an oblate (someone specifically dedicated to God’s service) in the Holy House at Loreto.
