Generally dated 1917–1918, this is the last of Sickert's four paintings on this theme. The first (Tate Britain), exhibited in 1914, was painted at 15 Fitzroy Street, London, W1, but inspired by 'a decayed first floor' on the corner of Granby Street and Mornington Square. Hubby, the model, was an old school friend of Sickert's fallen on hard times, whom he kept in beer. Numerous preparatory drawings survive, including several in the Ashmolean. It was this version of 'Ennui', exhibited at Agnew's gallery in 1933, which inspired Virginia Woolf's well-known account of the work published in her pamphlet on Sickert in 1934.
