The artist says: 'I set out to explore the psychological relationship between artist and sitter in my next portrait project when I met Eniola Sokalu, a young Chemistry student at Glasgow University originally from Notting Hill, London. I first came across Eniola through a painting of her by fellow artist Jennifer Anderson, who kindly put us in touch. Unlike my commissioned portraits, where I aim to reveal the sitter’s character and that distinctive spark in their expression, this portrait focused on creating a sense of atmosphere. My intention was to convey the interaction between artist and sitter, and to capture the subtle balance between vulnerability and strength. I like to begin each new portrait with a life sitting, but I also take photographs to continue working in my studio where I can fully focus on the painting process.
