This work consists of two different and contrasting elements – the life-size bronze figure of Sir Edward Elgar standing with his left hand upon the railing, and the bold simplified forms of the nearby fountain. Four irregular standing stone slabs, almost twice the composer's height, surround a horizontal slate cross with a water spring at its centre that alludes to the monastic origins of the town which grew up around the pure springs. Arching over it, within the four stones, is a tall slate arch only slightly lower than the stones that symbolises the priory. Elgar looks out past the fountain towards the Blue Bird Tea Rooms, where he regularly had tea.
