The bronze sculpture features an enlarged half-open freshwater pearl mussel shell, inside which there is no pearl, but one can find a mapping of the major distribution of the species in Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) in Scotland. The major SAC for freshwater pearl mussels in Scotland outwith Tay are (clockwise from left): Mingarry Burn, Ardnamurchan Burns, Moidart, Moriston, Kerry, North Harris, Abhainn Clais an Eas and Allt a' Mhuilinn, Borgie, Naver, Oykel, Evelix, Spey, Dee, and South Esk.
