The young lady is possibly Elizabeth 'Betty' Astry. Elizabeth, who seems little more than a girl in this portrait, married Sir John Smyth, heir to the Smyth family seat of Ashton Court, near Bristol. Elizabeth's portrait remained in the Smyth family collection until the last heir died in 1946 and the contents of Ashton Court were sold. Also at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery is an earlier portrait of little Hugh Smyth, Sir John's younger brother.
